18 Statron BDTe DC backup systems are part of several large-scale battery storage initiatives being developed in Bisha, Saudi Arabia.

The Bisha project

Saudi Arabia has proudly achieved a monumental milestone by energizing the Bisha battery energy storage system (BESS), a groundbreaking project completed in just 11 months. This 2.5 GWh facility is not only the largest in the Kingdom but also stands as one of the most significant on-grid Giga Batteries globally, setting a precedent for energy storage solutions. The impressive 500 MW/2’000 MWh BESS in Bisha, located in the picturesque ‘Asir province, is heralded by industry experts as the world’s largest operational single-phase energy storage project.

Statron proudly stands at the forefront of this transformative journey, delivering cutting-edge backup energy solutions that are vital for realizing Saudi Arabia’s vision of a sustainable energy future. Together, we are not just witnessing change; we are leading it.

Some overview data are:

  • Location: Bisha, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
  • Owner: Saudi Electricity Company (National Grid SA)
  • BESS battery technology: Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4)
  • Scope involves: 488 × 20 ft BESS containers

Just to put the numbers in some kind of perspective, this BESS could supply over 90’000 homes for a whole day off, one single charge! Energy storage systems like the Bisha BESS are pivotal in ensuring grid stability and facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources – such as solar and wind into the national energy framework.

The Statron solution

The project is among several large-scale battery storage initiatives being developed in Saudi Arabia where Statron DC backup system is a part of it.

The Statron DC Backup system is expertly configured to ensure uninterrupted performance for mission-critical applications at the Wave-1 substations (BISHA, Najran, Madaya & Khamis). In Wave-1, Statron has successfully supplied 8 units of BDTe systems, each equipped with over 3’000 Ah GEL battery blocks housed in a compact cabinet solution. This delivery underscores our commitment to providing efficient and space-saving energy solutions tailored to our clients needs.

Statron’s DC Backup system is strategically deployed to reinforce the reliability of mission-critical operations at the Wave-2 substations (Qaisumah, Dawadmi, Airport, Rabigh & Al Jouf SS) and Infrastructure, guaranteeing seamless functionality and operational resilience. In Wave-2, Statron has successfully supplied 10 units of BDTe systems, each equipped with over 3’000 Ah GEL battery blocks housed in a compact cabinet solution. This delivery underscores our commitment to providing efficient and space-saving energy solutions tailored to our clients’ needs.
